What Can I Do

Initially this application will be decided by Harrogate Planning Committee. It’s only a proposal at the moment but there is still a lot you can do.

  1. Firstly write to ALL Harrogate councillors – not just the planning committee. Click THIS LINK for their details. Particularly write to your local councillor.
  2. Write to your MP – you can find them for your postcode here https://www.theyworkforyou.com/user/changepc. Nigel Adams covers Selby and Ainsty nigel.adams.mp@parliament.uk, Andrew Jones covers Harrogate and Knaresborough andrew.jones.mp@parliament.uk.
  3. Write to your county councillor. Find them at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/councillors
You should write to all these people even if you know they support your views. They need a pile of letters to show they are acting on their constituents’ behalf!  We recommend you include your address even if it’s an email.

Sign the petition
The main thing we would urge you to do is to sign the petition at www.stopthebeetfactory.co.uk/on-line-petition. The email address you leave will only be used for the purposes of this campaign and will be destroyed when the campaign is over.

Report falling water pressure
If you notice a fall in pressure or other degradation in your water supply, please report it immediately to Yorkshire Water. https://www.yorkshirewater.com/contactus

Report the Incinerator stink
The smell from the sugar beet factory will only add to the stench already coming from the incinerator. If you live in the area, you will have noticed a dreadful smell recently. We’re all used to, and accept, farm smells but this is an acrid, sometimes burning odour. One lady was gardening wearing a mask the other day – it was so strong.
Do you have a sore throat which disappears when you leave the area? Do you notice horrible smells. If so report it.

If we can remind the authorities that people live here and this is totally unacceptable, perhaps we can persuade them that this factory must not be built. Please report the incident with date, time, wind direction and strength of smell (1 to 6 where 6 is strong) to enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk or call the Incident Hotline on 0800 807060. You will be given an incident number. The local office is on 03708 506506 but you need the incident number first. We recommend you email to provide an audit trail.
